Kim Kwang-hyun Faces Shoulder Surgery: What This Means for SSG Landers' Season

Daniel Kim | 2026.03.22

[Sports Today reporter Lee Sang-pil] Kim Kwang-hyun (SSG Landers) is set to undergo surgery.

On March 22, SSG announced that Kim completed roughly two weeks of rehabilitation after being diagnosed with a bony spur on the back of his left shoulder. After extensive discussions, the club said he will have surgery at a hospital in Nagoya, Japan, at the end of March.

The team said the rehab period is expected to last at least six months, and the club will provide full medical and rehabilitation support so Kim can focus on his recovery.

Kim experienced shoulder pain during the team's spring training in the United States and returned to Korea early on the 15th of last month. Detailed examinations revealed a posterior bone spur in his left shoulder.

He initially hoped to recover through rehabilitation but ultimately decided surgery was necessary.

Kim said, "After much consideration, I decided to have surgery. I understand shoulder surgery can be devastating for a baseball player, but I want to get healthier and extend my time on the mound—even if only by one year. I will work hard in rehab and come back."

He apologized to fans and teammates for being sidelined by the injury and said he will cheer the team on from the sidelines during his rehab. He added that he hopes the team posts strong results this season.
