[MyDaily = Reporter Kim Jong-guk] Werner, who once teamed up with Son Heung-min at Tottenham, scored his first Major League Soccer (MLS) goal in their head-to-head showdown.

LAFC suffered a 4-1 loss to San Jose on the morning of the 20th (Korean time) in Los Angeles in Round 8 of the 2026 MLS season. It was the first time this year LAFC conceded three or more goals in a single match. Son Heung-min played the full 90 minutes but did not record a goal or an assist.

Werner, reunited on the pitch with his former Tottenham teammate, drove San Jose’s attack and finished with a goal and an assist in a dominant display. In the 8th minute of the second half he burst down the left flank and delivered a low cross that teammate Bowda finished with a right-footed shot to open the scoring. Three minutes later, in the 11th minute of the second half, Werner netted his MLS debut by slicing through the heart of LAFC’s defense on a solo dribble and finishing with his right foot to extend the lead.

Before kickoff, Werner stopped his warm-up when he spotted Son, ran over and greeted him warmly. Werner spent two seasons on loan at Tottenham starting in 2023–24, where he played alongside Son. After the 2023–24 campaign his future was uncertain and Tottenham debated re-signing him on loan. Son recalled that when Werner first arrived at Spurs he looked a bit low on confidence, but now plays more comfortably and with clear self-belief. Werner once won the Bundesliga golden boot, and Son said he expects Werner to produce plenty of goals and assists. “I want to help him make the right decision—that’s what a teammate should do. I want him to stay at Tottenham,” Son said, and Tottenham eventually opted to bring Werner back on loan following the captain’s wishes.

After Werner’s standout performance against LAFC, San Jose head coach Arena told MLS that Werner is the kind of player who can be special for the team. Arena added it will take time for Werner to regain full fitness and match sharpness, but he believes Werner will be a major asset. San Jose missed the MLS playoffs last season, but they sit at 7-1 (21 points) this year—well ahead of LAFC (16 points)—and are battling Vancouver (21 points) for the top spot in the Western Conference.
