By Shin Won-chul, SPOTV News — Mexico made as much of an impression off the field as it did on it after a 16-0, six-inning mercy-rule victory over Brazil. Instead of reaching for bats and gloves, players grabbed brooms and dustpans and cleaned their dugout. They straightened equipment, worked together to collect discarded paper cups and sunflower-seed shells, and bagged the trash before leaving the stadium.
On March 9 at Daikin Park in Houston, Texas, Mexico overwhelmed Brazil 16-0 to record a six-inning mercy-rule win in Group B of the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Leading 12-0 entering the sixth, Mexico added four runs to push the margin beyond 15. With two outs and a runner on first, Julian Ornelas belted a homer to center-right, making it a 16-run game.
The win followed an 8-2 victory over Great Britain on March 7, leaving Mexico 2-0 in pool play. Against Great Britain, the game was tied 1-1 through seven innings before Mexico erupted for seven runs across the eighth and ninth. Mexico closes the group stage against the U.S. on March 10 and Italy on March 12; with Italy also unbeaten, that March 12 matchup could determine which teams advance to the next round.

Mexico nearly reached the final in 2023. In the semifinal they held a 3-0 lead over Japan before Masataka Yoshida of the Boston Red Sox tied the game with a homer. Mexico retook the lead but couldn’t protect a one-run advantage in the ninth and ultimately fell. Still, advancing to the semifinals after knocking off powerhouse teams such as the Dominican Republic and Venezuela earned the program widespread respect.
This year's roster is viewed as a bit lighter on pitching than in 2023 — Cody Ponce (Toronto Blue Jays) did not join the squad — but analysts still consider Mexico a legitimate candidate to move out of pool play.
The cleanup gesture drew attention across social media. After the decisive win on March 9, the Mexican players and staff stayed behind to tidy the dugout, sweeping and bagging trash. Sporting News highlighted the moment, saying the small act resonated widely online and has been called one of the more touching scenes of the 2026 WBC.
Mexico's 16-0 victory ranks as the third-largest margin in WBC history. The record margin belongs to South Korea's 22-2 win over China in 2023; the U.S.'s 17-0 win over South Africa in 2006 ranks second.
