[MyDaily reporter Choi Byung-jin] Manchester United has shown interest in signing Xavi Simons (Tottenham).
Spanish outlet 'Fichajes' reported on the 27th (KST) that Manchester United is closely monitoring Simons’ situation. The report says Simons fears his competitiveness would suffer if Tottenham are relegated.
Simons joined Tottenham this season after leaving RB Leipzig. Tottenham paid around £60 million (about 120 billion KRW, about $90,000,000) to sign him. He was handed the No. 7 shirt Son Heung-min wore for a decade, which only heightened expectations.
But Simons has struggled to adapt to the Premier League. Opponents' intense pressing has exposed his physical limitations. He has 2 goals and 5 assists in 28 league appearances, and 6 goals and 7 assists in 43 matches across all competitions.
Tottenham's form has also dipped. They sit 18th in the table and are embroiled in a relegation battle, two points behind 17th-place West Ham. With Roberto De Zerbi now in charge, relegation could trigger a wave of departures among key players.
Simons could be one of those departures, and Manchester United have him on their radar. Fichajes reports United are likely to return to the UEFA Champions League next season and plan to strengthen the squad, with Simons listed among potential signings.
The outlet also highlighted United's interest in Simons' creativity and attacking instincts, noting that United's new project could be an attractive proposition for the young midfielder.
Meanwhile, Simons suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the match against Wolverhampton on the 25th and will miss the remainder of the season.
