[iNews24 Reporter Jeong Yurim] Kakao Entertainment announced on April 29 that it will adapt Kim Suji’s new novel, The Forgotten Field, into a webtoon. Kim Suji is best known for the web novel Under the Oak.
KakaoPage and Kakao Webtoon will begin publishing the webtoon on May 5. The Forgotten Field was released on Amazon in 2022 and reached No. 1 in five countries, including the United States. It shares a universe with Under the Oak, the first Korean web novel to appear on The New York Times bestseller list.
The story follows Talia Roem Guirta, a tragic princess born of an affair, and Barkas Raedgo Shearkan, a nobleman from the east. Critics and readers praised the novel for its gripping portrayal of their romance. Last year it led all new web-novel releases in both unique readers and purchasers and spent two weeks at No. 1 on KakaoPage’s weekly novel chart. The title has drawn roughly 20 million views.
The adaptation and artwork are by artist Spoon. The webtoon vividly renders the protagonists’ complex, delicate inner lives through cinematic paneling and visual storytelling.
A Kakao Entertainment representative said, "We carefully designed even the characters' breathing rhythms to suit the vertical-scroll format, down to subtle shifts in eye movement. Viewers will also enjoy how the color palette shifts with the characters' emotions and the chance to take in the protagonists' ornate gowns and armor."
