Samsung Electronics' labor union, which has demanded performance bonuses equal to 15% of operating profit and has announced a general strike, plans to hold a rally in front of Chairman Lee Jae‑yong's residence on the first day of the strike, May 21.
Today (April 24), the cross‑company Samsung union filed a notification with the Yongsan Police Station in Seoul saying it will stage the rally at about 1 p.m. on May 21 in front of Lee's home in Hannam‑dong.
The rally was registered with an estimated attendance of roughly 50 people, but a union official said no firm headcount has been set. The official added the gathering is likely to take the form of a press conference announcing the general strike plans rather than a large street demonstration.
Some 40,000 Samsung union members gathered at the Pyeongtaek campus yesterday at around 1 p.m. for a rally. They called for permanently removing the cap on performance bonuses and announced a general strike running from May 21 through June 7.
