[Sports Today reporter Kang Tae-gu] Song Seong-mun (San Diego Padres) will open his first season in the Major Leagues on the injured list (IL).

MLB.com reported on March 23 (KST) that San Diego’s roster is taking shape, with infielder Ty France and pitcher Walker Buehler expected to be on the Opening Day roster.

MLB.com noted Song appeared in a Triple-A game and was slated to play a spring game on the 24th, but lingering oblique issues are expected to place him on the injured list to start the season.

The site added that he will begin rehab assignments once Triple-A gets underway and is expected to return to the big leagues soon.

Song signed a four-year, $15 million (approximately 20 billion KRW) contract with San Diego last December and suffered an oblique muscle strain during batting practice in January, which also forced him to withdraw from the 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC).

He pushed through spring games and hit his first home run in an exhibition against the Seattle Mariners on March 6, but was removed for a pinch-hitter before the top of the third inning and did not return; the team later confirmed the injury.

The injury turned out to be a recurrence of the oblique problem he sustained in January, ultimately ruling him out for Opening Day.

In spring camp, Song appeared in seven games and hit .250 (4-for-16) with one home run and one RBI, showing gradual signs of adjusting to his new surroundings.
