MLB.com reported Tuesday that the Phillies reached a six-year agreement with Sánchez.
The deal runs from 2027 through 2032 and guarantees $107 million (approximately 142.7 billion KRW). It also includes a club option for 2033 that could pay between $32.5 million (approximately 43.3 billion KRW) and $44.5 million (approximately 59.3 billion KRW).
Since debuting with Philadelphia in 2021, Sánchez has appeared in 104 major-league games over five seasons, posting a 30-21 record with a 3.24 ERA and 509 strikeouts.
Last season he posted career highs, going 13-5 with a 2.50 ERA and 212 strikeouts in 32 starts, finishing second in National League Cy Young voting.
Sánchez previously signed a four-year, $22.5 million (approximately 30 billion KRW) extension with the Phillies in June 2024. The club moved quickly on the new deal to lock him up long term.
MLB.com noted the Phillies could have kept Sánchez on his prior contract but chose to provide additional compensation to secure his future with the team.
Dave Dombrowski, the Phillies’ president of baseball operations, said, “We talked a lot over the winter about the club’s future. For a pitcher of Sánchez’s caliber, we thought moving quickly to extend him made sense.”
Sánchez added, “I’m happy to have the deal. The club has rewarded my performance over the past few years. It means a lot.”
Sánchez is also familiar to Korean baseball fans. In the WBC quarterfinals on the 14th, he started for the Dominican Republic and held South Korea scoreless over five innings, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out eight.
Facing Sánchez, South Korea ultimately fell 0-10 under the seven-inning mercy rule.
