[Sports Today reporter Shin Seo-young] MIAMI — World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz of Spain was upset in the third round (round of 32) of the Miami Open.

Alcaraz fell to Sebastian Korda (No. 36, USA), 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, on March 23 in Miami, Florida.

Coming off a semifinal exit at Indian Wells on March 15, Alcaraz was unable to advance to the round of 16 in Miami and left the tournament earlier than expected.

The 2022 Miami champion had been chasing a return to the title four years later but ran into a strong performance from Korda.

Korda, who is the brother of world No. 2 women’s golfer Nelly Korda, grabbed control early as Alcaraz struggled in the opening set.

Korda carried that momentum into the second, taking a 5-4 lead before Alcaraz rallied to win three straight games and force a deciding set.

In the third set, Korda converted a break at 3-3, then closed out the match 6-4 to complete the upset.

According to the BBC, Korda said he felt great and was pleased with his performance despite some tense moments. “There were a few risky moments, but I never lost belief,” he said. “I had to fight through some tough stretches, but I kept going and got the job done.”
