On the 23rd, Namyangju City in Gyeonggi Province announced it had finalized its 2026 Population Policy Implementation Plan to address demographic shifts such as low fertility and population aging.
The plan, under the vision Wannabe City! – a city where people want to live and stay, Namyangju, sets three policy goals—Happy City, Vibrant City, and Opportunity City—supported by four strategic initiatives and 83 specific projects.
The city will allocate KRW 99.5 billion (about $74.6 million), an increase of KRW 26.6 billion (about $20 million) from last year, to expand life-course, tailored policies focused on areas that directly affect residents: childbirth, care, education, housing, and the living environment.
Key measures include the first projects funded by the Population Policy Support Fund: the Youth Stay-On Project (housing support for young people) and an expanded per-bag garbage-bag subsidy for multi-child households, which now covers families with two children.
\"Our goal is to create an environment where residents can live happily and securely,\" a Namyangju City official said. \"We will continue to develop policies that reflect diverse needs to make Namyangju a place people want to live in and remain.\"
As of December 2025, Namyangju's population stood at 739,827, making it the seventh-largest city in Gyeonggi Province. Despite the nationwide population decline, the city's total fertility rate that year was 0.85—above the national average (0.8) and the Gyeonggi Province average (0.84).
Namyangju plans to leverage potential inflows from new-town development and improved transportation to strengthen residential conditions and accelerate the development of a sustainable urban foundation.
