Gijang County announced on April 24 that it is intensifying safety inspections and expanding community outreach as it vies to host a small modular reactor (SMR).
Mayor Jeong Jong-bok visited the 2026 Busan International Nuclear Industry Exhibition at BEXCO on April 23 to review domestic and international SMR technology trends and to meet with officials from the Korea Nuclear Industry Association. At the exhibition, he examined an SMR scale model that showcased integrated reactor design and passive safety systems.
Gijang is competing with Gyeongju for the SMR site. Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) plans to carry out a site-selection public opinion survey in May and June, and local acceptance is expected to be a decisive factor.
Ahead of the survey, the county has launched an intensive public information campaign and is increasing in-person engagement to explain SMR technology, safety measures, and potential economic benefits. During the Gijang Anchovy Festival, officials plan to operate an information booth near Daebyeon Port to reach more residents directly.
“We will help residents make informed decisions by providing accurate and transparent information,” Mayor Jeong said.
