Gwacheon City held a groundbreaking ceremony on April 24 at 92 Munwon-dong to begin construction of the Gwacheon Happy Dream Center, a facility intended to support the independence and social participation of people with disabilities.
The center will be a multi-purpose welfare facility offering vocational rehabilitation and independent living support for people with disabilities. City officials aim to complete construction by December 2027.
About 100 people, including city officials and local residents, attended the ceremony. Officials reviewed project progress and held a ceremonial groundbreaking. The facility will have two basement levels and three above-ground floors, with a total floor area of 4,796㎡ (about 51,624 sq ft). The city has budgeted 26.2 billion KRW (approximately $19.65 million).
The Happy Dream Center will house a sheltered workshop, vocational adaptation training facilities, rehabilitation counseling rooms, an experience home, and short-term residential units. The center is designed as an integrated welfare facility that combines job training, daily living support, and caregiving for people with disabilities.
Mayor Shin Gye-yong said, \"The Happy Dream Center will play a meaningful role in supporting the independence of people with disabilities and in building a foundation for community inclusion. We expect to complete construction safely and hope the center quickly becomes a vital welfare resource for residents.\"
Officials say the completed center will significantly expand social participation and strengthen the independence of local people with disabilities, providing an important platform for people with disabilities and the broader community to grow together.
