Kim Dae-sik Reframes Conservatism: “In a Time of Crisis, Politics Must Hold the Center”

Kim Dae-sik, a lawmaker with the People Power Party, has published a new book titled Why the World Is Enthralled by Conservatism. A sitting member of the National Assembly and a former head of the Yeouido Institute, Kim offers a direct account of the direction and role he believes South Korean conservatism should take, drawing attention across political circles.
In the book, Kim diagnoses the complex crises facing South Korean society — low birth rates and an aging population, regional decline, security threats, and rapid technological change — and argues that the core purpose of politics is to hold the center. He calls for redefining conservatism not as a backward-looking creed but as a pragmatic philosophy that guarantees the long-term viability of communities.
The book is organized around three pillars. It first examines the conservative principles embedded in the constitution and, through analyses of figures from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, proposes a model of conservative leadership. It then offers concrete conservative approaches to core national challenges — fiscal policy, welfare, diplomacy, and security. Finally, it addresses the conditions for a conservative party’s survival, paths for innovation, and systems for developing political talent.
Some in political circles view the work not as a mere ideological treatise but as a political blueprint. With the People Power Party facing challenges both inside and outside the party, the book outlines philosophical foundations alongside actionable policy direction. Observers also say it provides a reference point for South Korean conservatism amid a global trend many describe as a conservative resurgence.
Kim said, “Politics carries the responsibility of preparing for tomorrow, and conservatism is the force that holds the center.” He added, “I hope this book helps conservatives regain public trust and map out a sustainable future.”
Kim has served as head of the Yeouido Institute, vice chairman of the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission, and secretary-general of the National Unification Advisory Council. He currently serves on the National Assembly’s Education Committee, concentrating on medium- to long-term priorities such as cultivating future talent, promoting balanced regional development, and establishing a foundation for the artificial intelligence (AI) industry.
Kim will hold a book-signing on the 11th of next month to meet readers.
