[Anchor] With roughly a month to go before the local elections, the People Power Party leadership has divided responsibilities. Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok has been stepping up online attacks against the opposition, while Floor Leader Song Eon-seok has been on the ground gauging public sentiment. Tensions, however, seem to be rising over whether to nominate former presidential chief of staff Jeong Jin-seok. Reporter Jeong Hojin reports. [Reporter] After campaigning in Busan and Daegu over the weekend, party leader Jang returned to Seoul and, apart from attending the party’s supreme council meeting, focused his efforts on an online offensive. On social media he intensified attacks on the opposition with posts such as, “Lee Jae-myung commits the crimes and the party does the dirty work—straight-up gangster style,” and accusing the Democratic Party of blocking measures that would benefit domestically produced electric vehicles. In the Seoul metropolitan area, where public opinion has cooled, some interpret his online focus as a move to a secondary role. Meanwhile, Floor Leader Song visited a traditional market in Gangseo District, Seoul, to take the public’s temperature. At the scene, he said the atmosphere wasn’t bad and urged party unity. 「Song Eon-seok / People Power Party Floor Leader」 The public has ample reason to criticize us, but to keep South Korea on a steady course we must work even harder. We must move forward with one heart and one mind. The internal rift over whether to nominate former presidential chief of staff Jeong for a by-election appears to be deepening. The party’s nominations committee said it would finalize its decision on Jeong’s potential run for the Gongju–Buyeo–Cheongyang seat in South Chungcheong by the 7th at the latest. Jeong has pushed back, pressing the leadership: “Do you think you’ll win if you parachute in someone who simply suits Jang’s tastes?” By contrast, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, appearing on a radio program, said the individual in question should exercise restraint and accept personal responsibility in this election. Chungnam governor candidate Kim Tae-heum has indefinitely postponed both his resignation from the governor’s post and his preliminary registration as a local election candidate. The party leadership says it expects the nominations committee to make a reasoned decision and has signaled it is leaning toward excluding Jeong from the nomination. 「Park Seong-hoon / People Power Party Chief Spokesperson」 We understand the committee is listening to concerns. We expect them to reach the most reasonable conclusion to secure victory in the local elections. Meanwhile, the People Power Party plans to finalize its central campaign committee as early as later this week, and the leadership has hinted that Jang might join the campaign team.
