People Power Party lawmakers Choo Kyung‑ho and Yoo Young‑ha have formally entered a full‑scale contest for the party’s nomination in the Daegu mayoral race.
On April 17, the party’s nomination committee said it had selected two candidates to advance to the main party primary for Daegu mayor.
Choo is a former official at the Ministry of Finance and Economy who served as first vice minister and later led the Office for Government Policy Coordination, a minister‑level post. He won his first National Assembly seat in 2016 representing Dalseong County in Daegu and was re‑elected through 2024, becoming a three‑term veteran who has held key roles including floor leader, president of the Yeouido Institute, and executive vice president for strategic planning.
Yoo, regarded as a close aide to former President Park Geun‑hye, is a former prosecutor who was first elected to the Assembly in 2024 from the Daegu Dalseo‑gap district.
The People Power Party plans a debate on April 19, voting on April 24–25, and will name its final candidate on April 26.
On April 15–16, the party conducted votes among registered party members and a public opinion survey of ordinary citizens, weighting the results 70% and 30%, respectively, to determine who would advance.
As a result, Yoon Jae‑ok and Choi Eun‑seok, along with former lawmaker Hong Seok‑joon and former Dong‑gu District Mayor Lee Jae‑man, have withdrawn from the primary.
