
On April 2, Prime Minister Kim Min-seok directed a firm response to fake news circulating about the Middle East war, including claims of a dramatic surge in oil prices.
He told relevant agencies that false information spread via social networking services (social media) and other channels fuels public anxiety and disrupts the economy, and he ordered swift blocking and enforcement measures.
He instructed the Korea Communications Commission, the National Police Agency and other authorities to prevent the distribution of false information and punish offenders, and directed relevant ministries to monitor energy supplies and consumer prices in real time.
The government said it will promptly clarify the facts behind exaggerated expressions such as 'crisis' or 'shortage' to minimize market instability.
