Icheon, in Gyeonggi Province, announced on March 23 that it has broken ground on a multipurpose indoor gym in the Jungri neighborhood.
The Jungri District Multipurpose Indoor Gym will be built on a 4,000 m² site (about 43,056 sq ft), with a total floor area of 2,530 m² (about 27,238 sq ft) across three above-ground floors. The project budget is 13 billion KRW (about 9.75 million USD), including 3 billion KRW (about 2.25 million USD) in national funding.
The city is targeting completion in May 2027 and says construction will proceed without delay so residents can use the facility as soon as possible.
City officials expect the new gym to address the shortage of sports facilities in the growing downtown area and to contribute to residents’ health and overall quality of life.
Mayor Kim Kyung-hee said, “The Jungri housing development in Icheon is seeing strong population inflow. I expect the multipurpose indoor gym, together with the Women’s Vision Center scheduled to be completed later this year, to raise residents’ quality of life and become a space that promotes intergenerational communication and community vitality.”
