Flutist Kim Sohee, celebrated for her refined technique and subtle musicality, will present a solo recital that explores the flute's expressive depth.
She will appear May 13 at 7:30 p.m. at Kumho Art Hall Yonsei in Seoul. The program pairs solo flute works with flute-and-piano repertoire, spanning the Baroque through the late Romantic era and spotlighting the instrument's lyricism and dynamic range.
A graduate of Sungshin Women's University College of Music, Kim pursued advanced studies in Europe, earning master's degrees from the Rostock University of Music and Theatre in Germany, Kalaidos University of Music in Zurich, and the Anton Rubinstein International Music Academy.
She first drew notice after winning top prizes at the Seongjeong Music Competition, the Edu Classic Competition, the Seoul Arts College Competition, and the Pohang Music Association Competition.
Since then, she has built a career across Europe, appearing at the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Music Festival in Germany and performing with ensembles including the North Czech Philharmonic Teplice, the Rostock University Symphony Orchestra, the Savaria Symphony Orchestra, the Prime Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Korea Flute Educators Association.
Her résumé includes performances at prominent venues such as Dvořák Hall at the Rudolfinum in Prague, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, the Volkstheater and Katharinensaal in Rostock, and Baumgarten in Vienna, demonstrating experience as both a soloist and ensemble musician.
Kim studied with Dirk Peppel and Leonid Grudin. Early in her career she interned and served as a guest member of the North German Rostock Philharmonic Orchestra and performed with the North German Orchestra Academy and the Mecklenburg Wind Academy. She later taught full time at Berlin's Notenkind Music School and is currently active with the Arts Council Korea ARKO Ensemble in Europe.
Pianist Kim Sangwon will accompany her. He won third prize and the Composer Special Prize at the Lyon International Piano Competition, as well as the Bach Special Prize at the Ibiza International Piano Competition. His appearances include the Kumho Prodigy Concert series and a recital hosted by Bechstein in Germany.
The program opens with Marin Marais's Les Folies d'Espagne for solo flute, a piece that highlights Baroque ornamentation and the flowing rhythms of the variation style.
Also on the bill are Benjamin Godard's Suite de Trois Morceaux for Flute and Piano, Op. 116—celebrated for its elegant melodies and polished Romantic textures—and Heinrich Friedrich Ludwig Rühling's Fantasie for Flute and Piano, Op. 55, which emphasizes lyrical phrasing and expressive nuance.
The concert concludes with Sigfrid Karg-Elert's Sinfonische Kanzone, Op. 114, a work that melds late German Romanticism with modern harmonic color, revealing both the flute's lyrical warmth and its structural intensity.
