[Korea Financial Times reporter Shin Hye-ju] Jeju Air (CEO Kim I-bae) is stepping up its fleet modernization program.

Jeju Air announced on the 23rd that it took delivery of its 10th next-generation B737-8 on the 20th.

The delivery is the carrier’s second of seven B737-8s planned for this year, bringing its total next-generation fleet to 10. The airline currently operates 44 passenger aircraft.

Jeju Air began acquiring B737-8s in 2023 with two aircraft, added six more next-generation jets last year, and returned two leased aircraft that were over 20 years old.

After taking delivery of its ninth next-generation jet in early last month, the airline added the 10th within a month.

Jeju Air says it will continue expanding its next-generation fleet this year to improve fuel efficiency and ease fuel-cost pressures.

A company spokesperson said, "To respond to growing uncertainty in the operating environment—volatile oil prices and exchange rates, industry restructuring and intensified competition—we are centering this year’s management strategy on strengthening fundamentals." The spokesperson added, "This year we will both introduce seven next-generation aircraft and phase out older jets. Rather than expanding scale, we will focus on profitability and financial soundness, and we will increase investment to strengthen our safety-management systems and upgrade core operational infrastructure to rebuild trust."
