Alex Manninger, the Austrian goalkeeper who had spells at top European clubs including Arsenal and Juventus, died after his car collided with a train. He was 48.
Major outlets, including the BBC, reported on April 16 that Manninger was involved in a collision with a train at a level crossing near Salzburg that morning and later died. Local police said he was alone in the vehicle; the train driver was uninjured.
Manninger earned 33 caps for the Austria national team. He was also well known to South Korean fans after spending four seasons with Bundesliga side Augsburg from 2012, where he shared the dressing room with Koo Ja-cheol, Ji Dong-won and Hong Jeong-ho — the so-called "Korean trio."
Manninger signed for Arsenal in 1997 and went on to represent clubs including Juventus, Augsburg and Liverpool, building a reputation as a dependable backup goalkeeper. He retired in 2016.
