[Green Economy News = Reporter Moon Hong-joo] HDC Group marked its 50th anniversary with an environmental cleanup along the Jungnangcheon in Nowon District, Seoul, reinforcing its community-centered ESG agenda.
Company officials described the activity as more than a ceremonial event, saying it aligns with a broader strategy to expand social contributions around its major project sites.
HDC Hyundai Development Company and Hotel HDC staff said they carried out the cleanup near the Seoul One I'Park site on the 20th. About 30 employees waded into the stream to remove pollutants and invasive organisms, while volunteers simultaneously plogged along nearby walking paths to improve the riverside environment.
The activity highlighted a collaborative approach between the company and the local community, as Hotel HDC’s global hotel executives and regional officials joined the effort.
HDC said it plans to expand its project-site–based social contribution strategy. A company spokesperson said protecting the environment around Seoul One I'Park is part of the firm’s social responsibility and that it will continue cleanup and support initiatives focused on key project locations.
Observers in the construction sector say site-linked ESG initiatives are becoming an established trend. Firms are moving beyond simple donations and one-off volunteer events to design social programs that connect development projects with adjacent communities.
Several major builders have shown similar shifts. Hyundai Engineering & Construction has expanded the use of renewable energy and eco-friendly projects at its sites, while GS Engineering & Construction has coupled urban-environment improvement efforts with local partnerships to strengthen ESG management.
An ESG expert said, “Construction companies’ social contributions are shifting from image-driven efforts to initiatives directly tied to project sites. Going forward, whether activities produce tangible benefits for local residents will likely become a central criterion in corporate ESG evaluations.”
