President Donald Trump spoke by phone with President Vladimir Putin for an hour.
Oil prices have surged past $100 per barrel, sounding alarm bells for the global economy.
State-run TASS said the call was arranged at the U.S.'s request and described the discussion as practical and candid.
President Putin proposed concrete steps to end the Iran conflict and effectively offered to act as a mediator.
Trump described the talks as highly constructive.
At a press conference after the call, he raised the possibility of easing sanctions on Russian oil.

After allowing India to buy Russian oil, he signaled the possibility of further relaxations.
He said the administration could temporarily loosen Russia's energy lifeline to counter the oil spike and rising inflation.
Some see this as part of a so-called \"big deal\" that would use progress toward Middle East peace as leverage to press for an end to the war in Ukraine.
