K-pop’s virtual groups have reached a new milestone. A virtual idol that performs using real-time motion-capture technology has become the first to land on two major U.S. Billboard charts at once, a sign that artists built around virtual characters can register on global metrics.
VLAST said PLAVE’s fourth mini-album 'Caligo Pt.2' entered the Billboard 200 at No. 145 on the chart dated May 2. The group also placed No. 75 on the Artist 100 that same day — the first time a K-pop virtual group has appeared on both charts.
Tracks from the release, led by the title single 'Born Savage,' also charted on Billboard Global (excluding the U.S.). The album reached No. 2 on the Emerging Artists chart and appeared on the Top Album Sales chart, showing traction across multiple categories.
Domestic performance helped drive the global push. 'Caligo Pt.2' debuted at No. 2 on Melon’s Top 100 immediately after its April 13 release and sold more than 1.25 million copies in its first week, according to Hanteo Chart, setting a new personal best. It ranks second all-time for first 24-hour streams on Melon; the No. 1 spot remains held by its predecessor, 'Caligo Pt.1.'
The album continues the narrative begun on 'Caligo Pt.1.' It features five tracks — including the lead single 'Born Savage,' 'Heung Heung Heung,' 'Parade of Flowers,' 'Lunar Hearts,' and 'I Think So' — and spans styles from gritty rock to retro, new jack swing–inspired pop.
PLAVE’s Billboard entry also reflects broader industry trends. The Korea Creative Content Agency estimates the K-pop fandom business at roughly 3 trillion KRW (about 2.25 billion USD) in 2024 and projects it could expand to about 10 trillion KRW (around 7.5 billion USD) within five years. Goldman Sachs Research forecasts the global music market could grow to about 200 billion USD (roughly 266.7 trillion KRW) by 2035. In a market where physical album sales have declined by around 7.5% year over year, a virtual act breaking into main charts while posting 1.25 million first-week sales suggests an alternative growth path for K-pop.
PLAVE wrapped their debut Asia tour by selling out Seoul’s Gocheok Sky Dome on Nov. 21 and 22 last year with shows billed as 'DASH: Quantum Leap Encore (2025 PLAVE Asia Tour).' With global chart success and arena sellouts now on their résumé, the group appears poised to expand into major markets such as North America and Japan.
