[SPOTV News = Reporter Choi Sin-ae] Three years have passed since the death of the late singer Hyunmi.
April 4 marked the third anniversary of Hyunmi’s passing. On the morning of April 4, 2023, at about 9:47 a.m., she was found collapsed at her home in Ichon-dong, Yongsan District, Seoul.
Her fan-club president discovered her and immediately called the police. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but did not survive. She was 85.
Hyunmi had dined with acquaintances and appeared onstage in apparent good health the day before, so her sudden death shocked the music community. Her nephew, Han Sang-jin, carried her memorial portrait at the funeral, visibly expressing the family's deep grief.
Born in 1938 in Gangdong County, South Pyeongan Province, Hyunmi spent her childhood in Pyongyang and moved south during the 6.25 War's 1.4 retreat.
She began performing in 1957 for US Eighth Army morale shows and rose to prominence with the 1962 release of "Night Fog" (밤안개).
She went on to release a string of hits—including "My Love" (내 사랑아), "Face I Miss" (보고 싶은 얼굴), "I Simply Loved It" (무작정 좋았어요), "Lover" (애인) and "Wind" (바람)—and earned the status of a national music icon.
