(The CEN News / Reporter Ji-sun Lee) A program that translates the forest’s vitality and the rhythms of human breath into music is set to open in Busan.
The Busan Municipal Youth Symphony Orchestra will present its 80th regular concert, "Forest and Breath," on the 14th at 7:30 p.m. at the Nakdong Art Center Concert Hall. Principal conductor Seung-hyun Baek will lead the ensemble, with cellist Ho-chan Lee as the featured soloist.
“Forest and Breath” aims to evoke the life force of the woods and the subtlety of human breath through a carefully chosen program: Carl Maria von Weber’s Overture to Der Freischütz, Robert Schumann’s Cello Concerto, and Jean Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2.
Weber’s overture, written as the introduction to an opera set in the early 17th-century Bohemian countryside and forests, intertwines themes of good and evil and the power of love. Schumann’s Cello Concerto, widely regarded as a milestone of Romantic music, highlights the cello’s lyrical voice and warm, resonant tone.
Closing the evening, Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2 channels Finnish national sentiment and sweeping grandeur, a work that has long resonated with audiences worldwide.
Seung-hyun Baek studied orchestral and choral conducting in Germany and has led ensembles including the Detmold Municipal Theater Orchestra and the Gangnam Symphony Orchestra.
Active in both classical repertoire and contemporary composition, Baek serves as deputy conductor of the Busan City Symphony and as principal conductor of the Busan Municipal Youth Symphony. He also teaches at the university level and contributes to the growth of Busan’s musical community.
Cellist Ho-chan Lee has drawn attention in domestic and international competitions and has performed at festivals such as the Tongyeong International Music Festival and the PyeongChang Daegwallyeong Music Festival. He also serves as a music consultant and appears regularly on broadcasts and in documentary projects.
