Ryu Ji-hyun’s South Korea national baseball team gave up four runs in the bottom of the third after already trailing 0-3 in the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Baseball Classic at loanDepot Park in Miami, Florida, on March 14 (KST).
The game began poorly for Korea when starter Ryu Hyun-jin struggled, allowing three runs in the bottom of the second.
The Dominican offense kept up the pressure. In the third, leadoff hitter Juan Soto singled to center, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. followed with an RBI double to score him. Korea had a chance to tag Soto at the plate, but catcher Park Dong-won's tag came up short.
The Dominican Republic added another run on Manny Machado’s RBI single. Junior Caminero’s subsequent hit put runners on first and second with no outs.
Park Young-hyun and Gwak Bin struck out Julio Rodriguez and Agustin Ramirez, respectively, giving Korea a brief window to escape the inning. But Gwak then walked Geraldo Perdomo to load the bases and issued bases-loaded walks that forced in runs for Fernando Tatis Jr. and Ketel Marte.
South Korea only managed to finish the inning after Dane Dunning took the mound.
By the fourth inning, South Korea trailed 0-7.
