The victory improved LG to 5-4, while NC dropped to 6-3 after losing its second straight game.
LG starter Song Seung-gi picked up his first win of the season, throwing five scoreless innings, allowing four hits, striking out four and issuing two walks. Infielder Oh Ji-hwan finished with two hits and an RBI.
NC starter Verhagen also turned in a strong outing — five innings, three hits, four strikeouts and one walk with no runs allowed — but absorbed the loss. Reliever Shin Young-woo failed to record an out, issuing two walks and being charged with two runs, taking the defeat.
The game was a pitchers’ duel through the first five innings. Both starters, Song and Verhagen, managed traffic on the bases but kept the game scoreless into the sixth.
The deadlock finally broke in the top of the sixth. Against NC’s second pitcher Shin Young-woo, Austin and Moon Bo-kyung drew consecutive walks to set the table. NC turned to Kim Young-gyu, but pinch-hitter Koo Bon-hyuk delivered an RBI single to put LG on the board.
LG pushed the lead to 2-0 an inning later when Oh Ji-hwan added an RBI single.
The Twins turned to their bullpen in the bottom of the sixth and shut down any NC response. Kim Jin-seong, Jang Hyun-sik, Woo Kang-hoon and Yoo Young-chan each threw a scoreless inning, and LG closed out a 2-0 win.
