Public Times — On March 10, the Ministry of Justice announced it has produced and will distribute foreign-language translations of the standard residential lease agreement so foreign tenants with limited Korean proficiency can clearly understand lease terms and protect their rights.

The translations will initially be offered in English, Chinese and Vietnamese — the three most common languages among foreign residents in South Korea. Until now, the standard form was available only in Korean, and many foreign tenants overlooked unfavorable clauses or found it difficult to obtain legal protection during the contracting process.

The newly released translations include an annex that outlines key items tenants must know to secure legal protections, including how tenants’ rights can be asserted against third parties. Officials say the materials are intended to help prevent lease disputes and ensure tenants understand their rights.

The ministry said the translations were produced in response to a public proposal and that it plans to add more languages over time. The standard form can be downloaded free of charge from the Ministry of Justice or Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport websites.

Justice Minister Jeong Seong-ho said, "We expect the foreign-language standard lease forms to reduce cases in which foreigners enter into unfair agreements or fail to receive legal protection because of language barriers." He added, "We will continue to work to protect the lawful rights of foreign residents and promote social integration."
