Reuters reported on March 16 (local time) that Russia fined the online messenger Telegram 35 million rubles (about $435,500; roughly 580,666,667 KRW) for failing to remove prohibited content.

Telegram is widely used across Russia, and frontline troops have relied on the app as a key communications tool.

Russian authorities say Telegram is not complying with Russian law and have restricted its services since the 10th of last month, including throttling data speeds. In August of last year, they blocked Telegram’s voice and video calls.

Telegram denies the allegations, saying the restrictions are an unfair attempt to steer users toward the government-backed messenger MAX.
