The Public — By Oh Hong-ji: Danyang County announced on March 12 that it will step up enforcement against illegal burning within 100 meters of forested areas, citing increased wildfire risk from the season’s dry conditions.

Dry weather combined with strong spring winds can turn a single spark into a major wildfire, so officials are urging residents to exercise extra caution.

In many cases, wildfires start from careless acts such as burning agricultural residue.

Under the Forest Disaster Prevention Act, fines apply for illegal burning in forests or forest-adjacent areas: 500,000 KRW (approximately 375 USD) for a first offense, 1,000,000 KRW (approximately 750 USD) for a second, and 2,000,000 KRW (approximately 1,500 USD) for a third.

If burning leads to a wildfire, offenders may face up to three years in prison or a fine of up to 30,000,000 KRW (approximately 22,500 USD).

After receiving a report of burning in a forest-adjacent area in the early hours of March 12, the county said it will impose fines in accordance with relevant laws.

A county official said, "Because a small act of carelessness can lead to a large wildfire, please refrain from burning in areas adjacent to forests. Use shredders available from the agricultural machinery rental office or take advantage of the county’s labor-support programs to dispose of agricultural byproducts. We ask residents for their close attention and cooperation."
