(The CEN News / Reporter Kim Na-hyun) Prosecutors have charged a man in his 50s with attempted murder after he allegedly beat a taxi driver until the driver lost consciousness.

On the 13th, Asan police in Chungcheongnam-do said they transferred a man in his 50s identified as A to prosecutors, keeping him in custody on attempted-murder charges. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. on the 5th near Onyangoncheon Station in Asan.

Police say A repeatedly struck 70-year-old taxi driver B in the face and abdomen, causing serious injuries. Investigators report that A boarded B’s taxi in Yesan and began cursing and attacking him while the vehicle was in motion.

After B stopped the taxi near Onyangoncheon Station and stepped out of the vehicle, A continued the assault.

B suffered fractures to his skull and ribs and was transported to the hospital unconscious; he has not regained consciousness to date.

A, who currently works as a city bus driver, told police he does not remember the incident, saying he had been drinking.

Police initially investigated A on charges of assaulting a driver under the Act on Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes and sought an arrest warrant, but later elevated the charges to attempted murder.

A police official said that after reviewing CCTV and other evidence, investigators concluded A’s assault was so severe and caused such significant injury that it threatened B’s life, indicating intent to kill.
