Police in Eumseong, North Chungcheong Province, have detained a man in his 40s accused of repeatedly assaulting his wife and forcing her to lie face down.

On the 8th, Eumseong police said they took into custody a suspect identified only as A on charges of assault, coercion, and violating the Act on the Punishment of Domestic Violence.

Investigators say A repeatedly beat his wife from last year until recently, often over minor matters such as her appearing unhappy.

On March 19, he allegedly assaulted her after she found a hard bone in their samgyeopsal (pork belly), threatened to throw her out of the house, and forced her to lie face down for about an hour.

Authorities issued a temporary order barring A from approaching or contacting his wife within 100 meters (about 328 feet). Despite the wife’s placement in a temporary protective shelter, police say A contacted her hundreds of times and even filed a false report claiming “my wife is missing” in an apparent effort to locate her.

Police said they sought an arrest warrant because A has three prior domestic-violence incidents on his record and because he attempted to dominate his wife psychologically—commonly described as gaslighting—to undermine the investigation.

A currently denies all the allegations.
