Hong Tae-yong, a former physician and the People Power Party candidate for mayor of Gimhae, provided emergency care that helped revive a man in his 70s during a Parents' Day ceremony. At about 10:30 a.m. on the 8th, during a Parents' Day event at the Gimhae Western Senior Welfare Center in South Gyeongsang Province, a man in his 70s suddenly lost consciousness and collapsed. Hong, who was on site, saw the collapse and ran to assist immediately.
Hong promptly secured the patient’s airway and elevated his legs to improve circulation. He then engaged the man in conversation for roughly seven minutes to keep him responsive while administering first aid. Thanks to Hong’s swift actions, the man regained consciousness and was later transported to a hospital by South Korea’s 119 emergency responders.
Hong previously assisted another elderly person two years earlier. While serving as Gimhae mayor on May 10, 2024, he helped a man who collapsed during a senior citizens’ celebration at Chilsan Elementary School.
Hong said, “Before I became a mayoral candidate, I was simply doing what any medical professional should do,” adding, “When I saw him collapse at the event, my body reacted before I thought. I’m relieved the man recovered.”
