Gwangju City in Gyeonggi Province said on March 10 that it has established a dedicated school-bus pick-up and drop-off zone in Samdong to improve safety for students at Gwangnam Elementary School.

Until now, students in Samdong have been using school buses to reach Gwangnam Elementary, which is roughly 4 km or more (about 2.5 miles or more) away. Because there was no designated boarding area, about 100 students often had to wait in cramped conditions while boarding, raising safety concerns.

In response, the city installed its first dedicated school-bus pick-up and drop-off zone.

To improve boarding safety, officials installed a sliding protective fence that opens only when students are boarding. The city also plans to add a covered shelter so students can avoid rain and snow while they wait for the bus.

Mayor Bang Se-hwan said the city will continue expanding these facilities so children can travel to and from school safely and will work to improve students’ walking environment.
