This free service follows a partial amendment to the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province ordinance designating April 3 as a local public holiday for the victims' commemoration, which took effect on December 31 of last year.
The free rides apply to all Jeju city bus routes, including express and limousine services as well as main and branch routes. Riders may board without paying fares for the duration of service that day.
Because a dedicated free-ride system is not yet in place this year, officials will disable the power to transit card readers to allow free boarding.
Officials will also post notices inside buses and provide pre-shift training for bus operators to minimize inconvenience for passengers.
Going forward, authorities plan to consider introducing a transit-card–based free-ride system to monitor ridership systematically and establish a stable operational framework.
Kim Sam-yong, director of the Transportation and Aviation Bureau, said, \"We decided to operate free buses to honor the meaning of the April 3 Victims' Commemoration Day and to improve mobility for both residents and visitors. We will continue to oversee the service to ensure safe and smooth operations.\"
