Translation result. At Fifty days after the fire at the Safe Industrial plant in Daejeon that produced 74 casualties, officials held a memorial on the 9th at the joint mourning site in Munpyeong Park in Daedeok District.

Munpyeong Park, where the ceremony took place, sits close to the Safe Industrial facility and was a place victims often passed through on their commutes or visited to rest. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Daejeon city government moved the joint mourning site from Daejeon City Hall to Munpyeong Park Road on the 7th of this month and have operated it there; the site will close after today.

In his eulogy, Kim Han-su, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s disaster field support officer, said, “Along with our condolences and comfort, the government will continue, as it has since the accident, to do everything possible to determine the exact cause and to implement thorough follow-up measures.” He added, “We will establish a memorial facility beside the workplace where the victims labored as soon as possible. We will remember the tears of the families left behind.”

The Safe Industrial fire broke out at about 1:17 p.m. on March 20 at the company’s auto-parts factory. Fourteen employees were killed and 60 others were wounded. Police have named Son Juhwan, Safe Industrial’s CEO, and eight company safety managers as suspects on charges of professional negligence resulting in death and injury; they were not detained, and investigators are continuing to probe the cause.
