Prime Minister Kim Min-seok said on March 10 that the government’s preliminary feasibility study (preliminary feasibility study) approved the extension of Seoul Subway Line 5 to Gimpo and Geomdan, calling it “a major step toward resolving the nightmare commutes on the Gimpo Gold Line” and offering his congratulations.

On his Facebook page that afternoon, the prime minister said he had ordered a swift preliminary feasibility review of the key task—the extension of Subway Line 5—and that a short time later the study concluded the extension was justified.

He said that on the morning of Feb. 27 he rode the Gimpo Gold Line, personally experiencing how difficult the commute is for residents of Gimpo and neighboring areas and hearing their firsthand accounts. He described the extreme crowding—so severe that people had trouble breathing—as a violation of the basic rights of movement and work.

“The residents’ inconvenience is not over,” he said, adding that the government will accelerate the Line 5 extension project now that the feasibility study is complete and will take additional steps as needed, including increasing Gold Line service frequency and making rational improvements to local roads.

The prime minister said the government will consult closely with residents and National Assembly members and carry the project forward with transparency.

Earlier, the Ministry of Economy and Finance said on March 10 that it convened the “2026 3rd Fiscal Project Evaluation Committee,” chaired by Deputy Minister Im Ki-geun as acting minister, and reviewed and approved the preliminary feasibility study results and related agenda items.
