The campaign committee for Choo Mi-ae, the Democratic Party candidate for Gyeonggi governor, on May 2 congratulated Yang Hyang-ja on being chosen as the People Power Party’s candidate and called for a contest conducted in good faith.

In a statement issued by chief spokesperson Park Sang-hyuk, Choo’s campaign committee said, “We congratulate Yang Hyang-ja on securing the People Power Party’s nomination for Gyeonggi governor,” adding, “We hope this election produces a contest in good faith that advances growth in Gyeonggi — the heart of South Korea — and improves residents’ lives.”

The committee’s statement indicates it intends to keep the campaign focused on policy and vision.

Earlier on May 2, the People Power Party confirmed Yang Hyang-ja as its candidate for Gyeonggi governor. Yang won a three-way primary against former lawmaker Ham Jin-kyu and former MBC announcer Lee Seong-bae, with the result determined by an equal weighting of delegate votes and a public opinion poll (50% each).
