Lee Hyun-jae’s Cheokcheok Hanam campaign abruptly appointed former People Power Party Emergency Committee chair Kim Jong-in as head of its support committee ahead of the June 3 local elections.
The campaign will hold its opening ceremony at 3 p.m. on the 7th at 13 Daecheong-ro (KoA Building, 2nd floor) in Hanam and formally launch its election effort. Kim Jong-in, former Industry and Resources Minister Lee Hee-beom, youth campaign chair Lee Su-yeon, representatives from various sectors and regions, and local residents are expected to attend.
Lee Hyun-jae said Chairman Kim Jong-in has offered the right guidance at key turning points in South Korean political history. Bringing him on as support committee chair gives Hanam a solid springboard for the next stage of growth. Relying on his counsel, I will run a policy-focused campaign with concrete, practical proposals for Hanam’s development and repay that support with victory, he emphasized.
Spokesman Cho Hyun-joon said he believes former Emergency Committee chair Kim Jong-in recognizes Lee Hyun-jae’s efforts on behalf of Hanam and considers him the right person to advance the city’s future, so he has chosen to lend his support.
Kim Jong-in has long worked on economic policy and party strategy and has played strategic roles in major elections. Observers say his participation carries symbolic weight and could broaden the campaign’s appeal.
Local political analysts say Kim’s entry is likely to expand support among centrist voters and add policy gravitas, injecting significant momentum into Lee’s campaign.
Born in 1940, Kim served in the National Assembly during its 11th, 12th, 14th, 17th and 20th terms and has overseen election strategy as head of emergency committees for both the Democratic Party and the People Power Party in multiple presidential and general elections.
