Samsung SDI met with senior AWS (Amazon Web Services) supply-chain and energy-strategy executives to discuss potential collaboration on batteries for data centers, according to company sources.

On April 17, senior AWS procurement executives visited Samsung Electronics' Seocho building in Seoul and held a meeting with Samsung SDI officials.

The delegation included Jens Gruenkemeier, AWS vice president responsible for supply chain and procurement; Luis Padilla, director of server and networking supply-chain procurement; and Nitin Tyagi, who leads AWS’s energy storage strategy.

The meeting is seen as an effort to coordinate battery supply chains and capacity in response to the rapid rise in power demand at data centers driven by widespread AI deployment.

AWS, the world’s largest cloud provider, has been prioritizing power stability and securing backup power as it expands large-scale AI data centers.

Delaying Jeon Jae-su’s Resignation to Block Han Dong-hoon? …Jeong Cheong-rae Says, “We Won’t Use Tricks”

Some members of the Democratic Party suggested Rep. Jeon Jae-su might postpone his resignation to prevent former People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon from running in Busan’s northern constituency.

Facing criticism from opposition parties that such a move would be a political stunt, party leader Jeong Cheong-rae drew a firm line and pledged not to employ such tactics.

On April 17, Jeong told reporters at the temporary shelter “Manna Saem” in Yongsan, Seoul, that reports suggesting a resignation after the 30th could delay a by-election were unfounded.

“We won’t use tricks,” he said, adding that lawmakers who win nominations for metropolitan governor will resign in April and the party will then proceed with candidate selection.

Is It ‘Self-Serving Politics’ When Candidates Leave? …Jeong Cheong-rae’s Next-Leadership Moves Come Under Scrutiny

With the June 3 local elections approaching, Democratic Party leader Jeong Cheong-rae has been traveling nationwide to promote the party’s candidates.

While supporters say he is fulfilling his duties as the ruling party’s leader, critics accuse him of engaging in self-promotion.

Jeong frames his trips as “livelihood experiences” meant to hear voters’ concerns firsthand, but opponents argue that events spotlighting only the party leader — without candidates present — suggest he may be positioning himself for future party leadership, which they view as inappropriate.

At a policy event at the National Assembly on April 16, Jeong said, “These days I’ve been doing hands-on livelihood activities under the slogan ‘Into the Field, Into the People.’ Yesterday I tried drying seaweed in Gijang County, Busan. Every time I go out to the field I hear many real and important concerns that deserve attention.”

Shin Hyun-song’s Eldest Daughter, a British National, Illegally Reissued a Korean Passport and Used It at Immigration Checks

Documents show that the eldest daughter of Shin Hyun-song, the nominee for governor of the Bank of Korea, illegally reissued a Korean passport while holding British nationality and used it at immigration checkpoints.

According to materials obtained April 17 by Rep. Cheon Ha-ram of the Reform New Party, Shin’s daughter, identified only as A, had her Korean passport reissued in November 2022.

The passport remains valid until November 2027. The central issue is that A was already a British national at the time of the reissue.

A acquired British nationality in 1999 and thereby lost Korean citizenship but failed to submit the required notification of loss of nationality.

Samsung Union Issues Warning Aimed at Lee Jae-yong — Warns ‘30 trillion KRW (about 22.5 billion USD) Could Disappear’ in a General Strike

For the first time in the company’s history, a majority labor union has formed at Samsung Electronics, marking a significant turning point for the Samsung Group.

On April 17, Choi Seung-ho, chair of the cross-company Samsung Electronics branch of the Samsung Group union, declared, “Today the cross-company Samsung Electronics branch officially achieved a majority union for the first time in the company’s history,” and urged Chairman Lee Jae-yong to engage directly to establish proper labor-management relations.

At a press conference that morning outside Samsung Electronics’ Seocho building in Seoul, Choi said, “The era when company-run labor councils unilaterally represented workers is over. Only a cross-company union can represent Samsung Electronics’ 128,000 employees.”

The union used the event to formalize its majority-union status and to secure worker-representative authority. It said membership surged from about 6,000 before September 2025 to roughly 75,000 in seven months.
