Former Korea Communications Commission Chair Lee Jin-sook, who was cut from the People Power Party’s Daegu mayoral primary, said party leader Jang Dong-hyuk should restart the Daegu mayoral contest from scratch.

On the 2nd, Lee wrote on Facebook that Lee Jeong-hyun, the nominations committee chair who recently resigned, had said the committee’s work for the June 3 local elections was nearly finished before stepping down; Lee said she believes his resignation is linked to the backlash over her exclusion from the Daegu mayoral nomination.

She said that if the People Power Party selects its candidate through a fair primary, Daegu voters will not hand over Daegu—a source of national pride—to the political left. “From now on, we must focus solely on winning the June 3 local elections,” she added.

Although cut from the primary, Lee recently wore a mayoral sash and greeted Daegu residents. She wore white rather than the party’s signature red, prompting speculation that she might run as an independent.

After Lee Jeong-hyun resigned, she changed her Facebook profile photo to one showing her wearing a red People Power Party jacket.

She criticized party figures who argue over whether red or white attire is appropriate, saying such disputes undermine efforts to win the local election. She said candidates, herself included, are campaigning relentlessly to defend liberal democracy.
