A cafe in China has drawn attention for posting an unusual set of house rules.
On April 11, the South China Morning Post reported that a large notice—described by the owner as being posted \"out of necessity\"—was displayed at the entrance of a cafe in Weifang, Shandong Province.
The notice lists specific incidents that actually occurred in the shop.
In addition to standard no-smoking rules and a ban on baseless negative reviews, the sign forbids some unexpected behaviors: taking off shoes with severe foot odor, putting feet on chairs, and removing the small turtles from the pond.
The cafe owner said nearly half of the more than 70 turtles that once lived in the pond have disappeared.
He added that some customers have been dumping tea leaves and sunflower seed shells into the pond, and leaving behind items like black stockings and false eyelashes—conduct that has made other patrons uncomfortable.
It’s not just China. Recently in Japan, a ramen shop owner also sparked controversy after posting a ban on smartphone use in the dining area.
The owner told customers they must not use smartphones while eating and warned that anyone unwilling to comply should leave; refunds would not be offered.
He said the rule was prompted by diners who placed their phones on top of condiment containers while eating. \"I’m sad about it,\" he said, adding that he never wanted to impose such a rule but felt it was unavoidable.
