Big FA payday on the line — GS Caltex’s Ahn Hye-jin implicated in drunk-driving incident
GS Caltex issued an apology to fans via its official channels on the 17th. According to the club, Ahn Hye-jin was stopped during a police drunk-driving enforcement on the 16th and was found to be driving under the influence. Ahn reportedly notified the club of the incident immediately afterward. The club emphasized that drunk driving is inexcusable under any circumstances, and expressed deep regret to fans and everyone who supports the V-League.
The club said it feels a heavy responsibility, especially given how recently it celebrated a championship. GS Caltex is reviewing its player-management protocols and says it will conduct a thorough inquiry before taking strict disciplinary action.

After the club confirmed the incident, the Korea Volleyball Federation acted quickly. GS Caltex informed the federation immediately and asked that KOVO follow its formal procedures. A federation official said Ahn will be referred to the disciplinary committee, which could convene as soon as next week.
KOVO’s rules on drunk driving cover a wide range of penalties — from a formal warning or fine up to expulsion from the league. While no Korean volleyball player has been expelled for drunk driving to date, public pressure for tougher consequences means this disciplinary committee’s decision could set a significant precedent.
Threat to national team selection
Threat to national team selection
What adds to the fallout is that Ahn was named to the national team roster announced on the 16th — the day before the incident. The Korea Volleyball Association enforces strict moral-disqualification rules for national team selection, which bar players from selection if they received a court-finalized fine of 5 million KRW (3,750 USD) or more within the past three years, or a fine under 5 million KRW (under 3,750 USD) within the past two years.
Depending on the legal outcome and any penalties imposed, Ahn could be sidelined from the national team for a substantial period. That would affect her career and could complicate the women’s national team’s preparations ahead of international tournaments.
From top FA target to uncertain future
From top FA target to uncertain future
Ahn was in the midst of free-agent negotiations. As the proven setter who helped guide her team to a title, she had drawn strong interest from several clubs and was expected to land a lucrative FA deal. The drunk-driving scandal, however, has sharply diminished her market value.
For teams, losing a cornerstone setter would be a significant setback. But with public criticism intense, clubs may be reluctant to pursue a deal aggressively. The episode underscores the high level of responsibility expected of professional athletes. How Ahn responds and what stance the volleyball community takes next will be closely watched.
