[SPOTV News=Reporter Kim Geon-il] Brandon Clarke of the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies has died at age 29.
The Grizzlies announced Clarke’s death on the 13th (Korean time) in an official statement but did not disclose the exact cause or circumstances.
In a post on the team’s social channels, the Grizzlies wrote, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Brandon Clarke. He was a great teammate and an even better person. His presence will be long remembered in Memphis and the community.”
The club added, “We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
Clarke had not played since last December. He was sidelined with a calf injury and had been rehabbing, but the team announced in March that he would miss the remainder of the season.
U.S. media reported Clarke was arrested in Arkansas in April on drug-related charges after a police chase; he was later released on bail.
The NBA said it was shocked by the news. Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement, “I’m stunned by the news of Brandon Clarke’s death. He was a beloved player in Memphis who brought tremendous passion and grit to the game.”
Silver added, “My condolences go out to Clarke’s family and friends, and to the Grizzlies organization.”
Clarke’s agency said, “We are devastated. He was one of the warmest people you could know and always stood by his friends and family.”

Clarke first made a name for himself in college with explosive athleticism and relentless hustle. After starring at Gonzaga, he was selected by the Grizzlies in the first round of the 2019 NBA Draft.
From the start of his NBA career, he stood out for his energy, rebounding, defense and effort, becoming a key rotation player for Memphis.
Over seven NBA seasons, Clarke averaged 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds. He wasn’t a flashy superstar, but his selfless style earned deep respect from fans and teammates, and he was seen as one of the contributors who helped lift Memphis’ young core.
