A man in his 50s who roamed the streets of Daegu’s Dong-gu district at night armed with a bladed weapon — obstructing pedestrians and threatening passersby by cutting and stabbing trees along the roadside — has been sentenced to eight months in prison.

The Daegu District Court’s Criminal Division 1, presided over by Judge Kim Dong-seok, said on the 5th that it had sentenced the man identified only as A to eight months’ imprisonment. He was convicted of carrying a weapon, obstructing pedestrian traffic and repeatedly engaging in threatening conduct during an incident that occurred around 10 p.m. on Dec. 18 last year.

Police arrested A at the scene after receiving a report. When officers brought him to the station, he hurled insults, struck out with his fists and slammed a chair, behavior for which he was also charged with obstructing official duties.

The court said, “Although the defendant’s admission of the facts is a mitigating factor, we weighed multiple sentencing considerations, including the considerable danger posed by roaming the streets at night while armed and brandishing the weapon, and the seriousness of obstructing official duties.”
