[Anchor] A collision between a cargo truck and protesters at a rally in Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province resulted in three casualties, including one fatality. Clashes between protesters and police also produced additional injuries. We’ll connect to our field reporter for details. Ha-jun. [Reporter] I’m at the Cargo Solidarity rally site in Jinju, South Gyeongsang, where the incident occurred. Union members affiliated with Cargo Solidarity and police have been facing off here since this morning. At about 10:30 a.m., a logistics truck struck three union members; one was killed and two were injured. Video from the scene shows some protesters blocking the vehicle to prevent it from leaving, while police officers worked to clear a path so the truck could exit. As the truck and people became entangled, several union members were struck. The fatality was a member of Cargo Solidarity’s Jeonnam branch; two others sustained injuries of varying severity. Police have booked the truck driver on suspicion of causing special bodily injury. Now, a union member who witnessed the accident speaks: 「Yu Byung-hoon / Organization Director, Cargo Solidarity, Gyeongnam Regional Headquarters」 There were two people near the vehicle, but the driver just hit them and drove off. He didn’t get out; he kept his head down and acted like he didn’t know anything. The union has held the protest since April 16 to press BGF Retail, the employer, for joint bargaining and guaranteed rest breaks. The accident occurred as protesters tried to stop non-union logistics vehicles from entering. After news of the union member’s death spread, the protest repeatedly flared and then cooled. Around 1:30 p.m., a vehicle associated with Cargo Solidarity drove into a police barricade, injuring one officer. Police have charged two protesters with obstructing official duties and are investigating them. Cargo Solidarity alleges that an excessive police response led to the member’s death and has vowed to escalate its campaign. The Public Transport Workers’ Union urged the government to resolve the situation and issued a statement condemning CU for refusing to negotiate. With union members converging from across the country, an overnight standoff is expected. This has been Ha-jun for Yonhap News TV at the Cargo Solidarity rally in Jinju, South Gyeongsang.
