Legal sources said on the 24th that the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors’ Office asked the court yesterday for one-year prison sentences at the sentencing hearing for the former father-in-law and brother-in-law of Ryu’s son. The two are charged with violating the Communications Privacy Protection Act.
Prosecutors say the pair entered the couple’s home in May 2024 and installed a “home cam” while the couple were undergoing divorce proceedings.
According to prosecutors, the device was placed on May 14, 2024, at a time when the couple were separated and the house was unoccupied.
According to the indictment, the former brother-in-law said he decided to record conversations arising from the dispute. He entered the couple’s home, placed a recording-capable “home cam” in the kitchen, and covered it with a box to conceal it.
Prosecutors’ investigation found that the former father-in-law and brother-in-law recorded a conversation between Ryu and his younger brother at 1:30 p.m. on May 22, 2024.
At the hearing, the former father-in-law and brother-in-law denied the charges, saying they installed the device for security purposes rather than as a hidden camera.
Earlier, Ryu alleged his daughter-in-law had an inappropriate relationship with a high school senior, but prosecutors declined to indict due to insufficient evidence.
The first-instance sentencing for Ryu’s former father-in-law and brother-in-law is scheduled for April 17.
