Flagship SUV bows out as VW accelerates electrification

Volkswagen is retiring the internal-combustion version of its flagship SUV, the Touareg, with a limited Final Edition.
As part of a broader electrification strategy, VW will end production of the ICE Touareg, formally closing a 24-year run with this model.
Since its 2002 debut and through three generations, the Touareg has sold more than 1.2 million units worldwide and established itself as the cornerstone of the brand’s SUV lineup.

The Touareg Final Edition is a limited-run model designed to mark the end of the line.
VW applied "FINAL EDITION" lettering to the exterior window frames and throughout the cabin, and added exclusive touches such as a leather-wrapped gear lever and custom door sills.
More than a trim package, the Final Edition is a symbolic send-off that celebrates the Touareg’s role in building Volkswagen’s SUV legacy.

The Final Edition is powered by VW’s EA897 evo3 3.0-liter V6 TDI diesel engine.
Output is rated at 286 PS (about 282 hp) with 61.2 kg·m of torque (approximately 600 Nm / 443 lb‑ft). The engine is mated to a full-time all-wheel-drive system and an 8-speed automatic transmission, delivering strong on- and off-road capability.
Air suspension, all-wheel steering and a roof-load sensor round out a suite of chassis technologies that preserve the Touareg’s balanced driving character.
Possible revival as an electric vehicle

The Touareg name itself may not disappear. Volkswagen is evaluating the use of existing nameplates for future electric models, opening the door to an "ID. Touareg" or similar EV reinterpretation.
The departure of this once-defining internal-combustion SUV underscores a strategic pivot toward electrification across the brand.
