A carbon monoxide leak briefly occurred on the sidewalk near Cheonggyecheon in Seorin-dong, Jongno District, Seoul.

Fire officials said they received a report at about 4:40 p.m. on April 12 stating, "there were only scorch marks, with no smoke or flames," and dispatched five vehicles and 22 personnel.

Authorities believe an electrical short in wiring inside a pipe beneath the sidewalk caused the carbon monoxide release.

Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) cut power and took other necessary measures. No injuries were reported.

Fire officials withdrew from the scene around 8:40 p.m., and investigators are examining the exact cause of the incident.
