Sokcho City will launch the Fishing Vessel Modernization and Safe Operation Support Program in 2026 to counter the decline in fisheries caused by changing marine conditions and to boost fishermen’s incomes.
This year the city is allocating a total budget of 1 billion KRW (KRW 1,000,000,000; approximately $660,000) to carry out 10 initiatives—such as distributing eco-friendly and energy-saving equipment and supporting smart fishing gear—targeting about 98 fishing vessels.
In particular, the city is expanding efforts to replace engines with high-efficiency models, distribute eco-friendly LED fishing lights, and support fuel-saving equipment. These measures are intended to advance carbon neutrality, reduce operating costs, and foster a sustainable fishing environment.
To boost operational efficiency, the city will supply modern fishing gear and introduce automatic vessel navigation systems. At the same time, it will roll out safety measures—such as distributing life jackets, installing onboard CCTV, and providing subsidies for vessel repairs—to prevent accidents. These steps aim to protect fishermen and improve productivity.
Lee Byung-seon, mayor of Sokcho, said, "We will actively incorporate feedback from the field and expand a range of support so that fishermen can work more safely and efficiently. We will continue to do our utmost to develop policies that improve operational safety and the business environment for the fishing industry."
